A Message from Superintendent of Schools
Judith A. Elias
Dear Community Member:
Welcome to the new school year! The community’s overwhelming approval of the 2006-2007 budget enables us to begin the year with renewed enthusiasm and optimism about our District’s future. Having grass roots support is essential to the well-being of our students and schools. It reassures and strengthens us to know that this community believes in a high quality K-12 educational experience for the children we serve.
The new school year promises to be a busy and productive one for all of us, and I am privileged to be serving at the helm. In addition to our supportive parents and community, I am pleased to be working with a strong and capable administrative team, a dedicated Board of Education, a committed PTA, and an outstanding faculty and staff. I welcome our two new assistant superintendents – Mary Cahill and Ed Ehmann – who bring to their new positions many years of dedicated service to Smithtown’s students. The expertise, talents, and perspectives of those who have spent their entire careers in Smithtown, along with those who bring their experiences from other districts, combine to make our school system a caring, child-centered, and vibrant one.
Learning is an ongoing process over a lifetime, and along the way, there are many significant milestones. One of the many milestones we celebrated this past June was the graduation of 700 students from the final combined Smithtown High School Class of 2006. We are proud that 95 percent of the graduates attained Regents Diplomas and that the vast majority will continue onto higher education. In September, we will have two fully functioning 9-12 high schools and look forward to two graduations in June 2007.
As a learning community, our District takes great pride in providing students with the best possible preparation to succeed in their educational journey. Our mission is to continuously find ways to ensure that each student experiences success. Although Smithtown has always had a tradition of excellence, we can still make even greater strides on behalf of our students.
We will keep you informed about our activities, and we encourage you to become actively involved in our schools. We understand the importance of families, schools and communities working collaboratively to enable our students to thrive and prosper.
We look forward to working with you to ensure that all of our children receive the quality education they so richly deserve. Best wishes to you and your family for a happy, healthy, and successful school year.
